One of our favorite artists from the L.A. emerging scene is the indie bedroom pop maker Katzú Oso.
What’s different about Katzú Oso, born Paul Hernandez, is that he blends the bedroom pop genre with 80s nostalgia, creating his own brand of chill wave in the music industry.
To sonically embody his East L.A. roots, he combines uptempo beats, melodic vocals and synths. Furthermore, in a press statement, he says that his music is an “experience of growing up in a great metropolitan city by navigating its music while being young and brown in America.”
Recently, he has opened for Girl Ultra’s summer tour last month, as well as launched his debut album Tmí on May 20. With Tmí, Oso experimented with new sounds such as psychedelic, disco, and hip-hop, to name a few.
This work was inspired by his East L.A. community and it shows as the listener navigates through the 11-track musical project. Tmí was produced by Charlie Brand (Miniature Tigers), and assisted by David Garza (Fiona Apple, Sharon Van Etten, Hanson) in the following tracks: “Don’t Ask Why,” “Diabla” and “Mooglight Sonata.”
Katsu is getting ready to perform at The Paramount in Los Angeles, CA on Friday, July 8. This location is specifically in the historic Boyle Heights area, where many L.A. natives give ode to.
The night will also showcase the music by alternative acts Yungatita, and The Voxes. Other upcoming highlights of Oso include being part of this year’s Austin City Limits’ first weekend which will take place at Zilker Metropolitan Park in Austin, Texas from Oct. 7 to Oct. 9.
